This article provides an ‘Introduction to the Agile User Stories and Tasks’ and looks to discuss what a user story is and what and Agile Task is.
Agile Story Writing: Planning User Stories and Tasks
While the planning conducted within scrum projects doesn’t rely heavily on the creation of documentation and in-depth to-do lists, there still needs to be some way to measure and track effort. In scrum, this takes the form of user stories and task estimation. We’ve discovered how effective tasks can be in helping your team understand the goals of the product.
The estimation of the effort each task will require, takes place at the sprint planning meeting, which aims for an outcome of shared team perspective.
If all of the team members have a shared understanding, the estimation process will become more consistent and effective when estimating the effort required and complexity of user stories and tasks. If you are using story points for estimating user stories, you can use the planning poker technique to estimate the user stories.
However, when it comes to tasks, a measure of time is commonly used. Time estimation can also be used to make sure that you’re not trying to adopt too large a scope. If your task can’t be finished in one working day, you’ll need to break it down further. Once you’ve estimated the amount of time each of the tasks will take, you’ll know how many tasks you can complete in your upcoming sprint.
Keep in mind, however, that this time estimating is in ideal time. Ideal time represents how long a task would take if that’s the only task the team member is working on. This is assuming they’re not interrupted by anything while they’re working, and everything that they need to finish the task is available to them. Elapsed time is the time the task actually took.
Remember, the creation and estimation of tasks aids the creation of value.

User Stories Applied by Mike Cohn is one of our favourite books on Agile User Stories. The book starts with an overview into user stories, and details what a user story is and the different aspects of them. He then discusses how to go about writing a user story, and provides details of the INVEST criteria that can be used to determine if the story is meeting all of its objectives. Next Mike gives an in depth discussion of who user stories are written for and where to begin when gathering the details for them. The book then discusses acceptance testing user stories, including how to go about specifying these criteria and the responsibilities of the development team and customers during this process.
