The Declaration of Interdependence

You have just found out that you’ve been put on a team to develop the newest software for your company. At first you’re excited, because the software is supposed to be a really cutting-edge program that’ll shake up the tech world. Plus, the type of software you’ll be developing is right in your area of expertise.

You show up to work ready to roll up your sleeves and dig in, only to be told that you’re going to be inputting data for the duration of the project. You’re sure you’ve heard your team leader wrong; surely they’d want you to have more of a hand in developing the software? But no, other people on the team who don’t have the same knowledge and experience as you do will be the ones writing the program.

Fast forward a few months, and the project is a wreck. The people who are developing the software are doing their best, but they just don’t have the experience they need to make the program great. Meanwhile, you’re suffering through a simple job that completely wastes your knowledge in the subject area.

After finishing the project, you feel unfulfilled and disheartened. You wonder if there’s another way that your team’s process could be streamlined so that everyone’s skills are taken advantage of and each member can give their best to the team.

User Stories Applied

A 59 Seconds Agile Book Review

User Stories Applied by Mike Cohn is one of our favourite books on Agile User Stories. He then discusses how to go about writing a user story, and provides details of the INVEST criteria that can be used to determine if the story is meeting all of its objectives. Next Mike gives an in depth discussion of who user stories are written for and where to begin when gathering the details for them. The book then discusses acceptance testing user stories, including how to go about specifying these criteria and the responsibilities of the development team and customers during this process.
