Writing Agile User Stories

A 59 Seconds Agile Article

This article provides an ‘Introduction to Writing Agile User Stories‘ and looks to discuss what a User Story is, the benefits of User Stories and how to write an Agile User Story.

Agile User Stories: What They Should and Shouldn’t Be?

When working within an Agile development environment, the name of the game is “streamlining.” Everything is made leaner and compartmentalized in ways that allow for the iterative delivery of the project.

In Agile, development and testing are performed in parallel allowing for a constant, forward motion within the project.  This constant momentum forward prevents anyone from sitting idly while waiting for another team member to finish before they can start.  Even the process of user stories has been streamlined in the Agile development process!

A key component of agile software development is putting people first, and user-stories put actual end users at the center of the conversation.

User stories reduce the possibility of confusion and misunderstandings because they are submitted in the manner that the customer uses and recognizes. Other objectives of User Stories are to increase the speed of delivery and allow for flexibility and responsiveness in the design and build processes.

Good User Stories addresses the why and the ‘who’ behind each requirement as well as encapsulating the anticipated standards that must in place to merit the Customers satisfaction. The why is helpful as a measure of prioritization and the anticipated standards serve as a starting point for establishing a set of boundaries around each User Story. By leaving out the specifics of the “how” elasticity is introduced; allowing for technical decisions to be made without necessitating changes and approvals.

User Stories Applied

A 59 Seconds Agile Book Review

User Stories Applied by Mike Cohn is one of our favourite books on Agile User Stories. The book starts with an overview into user stories, and details what a user story is and the different aspects of them. He then discusses how to go about writing a user story, and provides details of the INVEST criteria that can be used to determine if the story is meeting all of its objectives. Next Mike gives an in depth discussion of who user stories are written for and where to begin when gathering the details for them. The book then discusses acceptance testing user stories, including how to go about specifying these criteria and the responsibilities of the development team and customers during this process.
